“When I’m folding, I’m objective and that allows me to forget myself.”
ーSimon Hantaï

Simon Hantaï was born on this day, December 7, in Bia, Hungary.

Known for his kaleidoscopic abstract works, Hantaï originated the technique of “pliage” (folding), in which a canvas is crumpled and knotted, uniformly painted over, and then spread out to reveal a matrix of alternations between pigment and ground. The artist's 1980 painting “Tabula” was presented on the Gagosian website for Art Basel Miami Beach Online last week. Read more about Hantaï via the link in our bio.

Two remarkable artworks by the French-Hungarian artist Simon Hantaï from 1971 and 1980 are some of the absolute highlights at the upcoming preview opening this Thursday in Copenhagen with estimates of DKK 1-1,5 mio and DKK 800,000-1,000,000.

The works come from the collection of the renowned Danish art historian and Matisse-connoisseur Hanne Finsen, who said about the artist:

“After Cézanne, after Matisse, after Pollock which paths can you walk if you carry the weight of them with you and at the same time think you have to toss them aside to be yourself? That’s the question. Hantaï provides an answer which cannot be ignored”.

The works are made in Hantaï’s characteristic “pliage” technique which he developed after encountering other modernist painter’s engagement with the materiality of the painting, e.g. the modernist action painting of Jackson Pollock. You can read much more about Simon Hantaï’s abstract artworks and intriguing techniques via LINK IN BIO.

As a young man in Paris at the sunset of Surrealism, in 1952 Hantaï sought – and was afforded – the attention of André Breton. In 1955 the exhibition 'Cinquante ans d’art aux États-Unis' introduced him first hand to the abstract-expressionist works of Jackson Pollock, which sent Hantaï in radical new directions: not dripping with a stick, but applying thin veils of paint in a scraping action with a piece of circular metal from a clock casing.
The four works shown here are from the most significant period of Hantaï’s career, spanning the length of his experiments with 'Pliages' – canvases folded, crumpled, knotted or masked prior to the application of paint. The 'Pliages' evolved through tightly delineated series, each marked by a shift in technique, three of which are represented here: the early 'Mariales', the 'Études', and the later and long-running 'Tabulas'. 'Simon Hantaï, Pierre Soulages and Antoni Tàpies' continues at Timothy Taylor, London until 19 October 2019.

Known for his kaleidoscopic abstract works, Simon Hantaï originated the technique of "pliage" (folding), in which a canvas is crumpled and knotted, uniformly painted over, and then spread out to reveal a matrix of alternations between pigment and ground. Hantaï began creating these “pliage” paintings in 1960, conceiving of the process as a marriage between Surrealist automatism and the allover gestures of Abstract Expressionism. The artist died at his home in Paris on this day, September 12, in 2008, leaving behind a corpus of fractal-like compositions whose surfaces exist in flux between deliberate and arbitrary mark making.

Earlier this year, surrounded by the exhibition "Simon Hantaï: LES NOIRS DU BLANC, LES BLANCS DU NOIR" at Gagosian, Le Bourget, the late artist’s three sons performed a concert inspired by the works on view. Follow the link in our bio to watch the video.
