Georgia O’Keeffe au Centre Pompidou

Exposition « Georgia O’Keeffe »
au Centre Pompidou jusqu'au 6 décembre 2021

Billet Centre Pompidou

I’ve been thinking about this photograph of Georgia O’Keeffe lately. I wonder about the solitude she and some other women artists seemed to have thrived in. How did they do it? Also, this photograph reminds me that there can be many creative years ahead. These seem like blessings on good days, and challenges on others.
I recommend listening to Wanda M Corn’s interview with thegreatwomenartists about Georgia O’Keeffe, and getting the book, “Georgia O’Keeffe: Living Modern”! What a woman!

#openroadinspiration brought to you by O'Keeffe by way of tonyvaccarophotographer okeeffemuseum “In 1960, at age 73, the artist embarked on a series focusing on the sky above the clouds, the abstract rivers below and vast horizons visible only from the air. She stripped her subjects to their purest forms and colors to heighten their expressive power. She reduced the curved planes and contours to a symphony of basic colors, shapes, textures, and rhythms, simplifying the forms almost to the point of complete abstraction.” - okeeffemuseum Georgia O'Keeffe. Georgia O’Keeffe settled in Abiquiú and grew into an icon, not only for her modernist interpretations of flowers and landscapes but for her fierce autonomy. Eleven years after her 1986 death, the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum opened in Santa Fe, with stunning samples of her work. “There has been a growing fascination with O’Keeffe the person,” says curator Ariel Plotek. “The dual sides of her story—the life and the art—have come to interest our audience more and more.”

She painted flowers so they will not die.
I was very happy to see the first retrospective in France dedicated to Georgia O’Keefee at the Centre Pompidou museum. She is one of the major artists of the 20th century and one of my favorite artists of all. I first discovered her work during my very first visit in the USA years ago. I’m in love with her work since this American trip. Her art, once considered modernist and avant-garde, is based on a careful observation of nature and her willingness to paint what she feels. She stayed away from the currents, following her own path. O’Keeffe close-ups of flowers, which characterize much of her production and is my favorite part of her works, reveal her keen sense of observation.
The format of her paintings, the colours and shades make her paintings practically abstract. If plant and flowers inspiration is a recurring motif for the artist, this exhibition places it in a tradition that is rooted in the great feeling for nature inherited from historical Romanticism. Her landscapes and plant motifs are tinged with eroticism and a strong sensuality which do not leave the viewer indifferent. So many interesting artworks to see and so much information to learn about her and her artistic practice. I highly recommend the visit of this exhibition.
What do you think about her work?

#GeorgiaOKeeffe captured the attention of the art world with the flower paintings she created between 1918 and 1932. This sensuous depiction of calla lilies, the artist’s ideal motif, was created in 1928, the same year O’Keeffe broke the record price for any living artist at the time with a set of works depicting the same flower.
Experience this work in person in our Sothebys Palm Beach residency at the TheRoyalPoincianaPlaza February 13 through March 5 and visit the link in our bio to explore the exhibition.
